P90X Workouts Review: Yoga X
Article by Clint Nolan
"I can do things at 45, not because I can do a bunch of pull-ups, it's because I do Yoga!" - Tony Horton
I was born and raised in blue-collar Chicago by a United States Marine and Police Officer. I've trained in "brutal" martial arts like Wing Chun and Krav Maga. I eat nails for breakfast - without any milk (ok, ok, so that was stolen from Spongebob). Nevertheless, I tell you this not for bravado's sake, but to give you a reference point from which to understand my review of a seemingly "wimpy" workout like Yoga X.
The people I have spoken with who have gone through P90X can usually be divided into 2 camps: Those who hate Yoga X and Those who love Yoga X. So when I saw that yoga was a part of P90X, I was looking forward to experiencing the "extreme" side of Yoga.
Time: 90 MinutesEquipment: Yoga mat, Yoga blocks (optional)
Since Yoga X runs about an hour and a half, you'll have to make sure you block out a little more time than the other P90X routines to get it done. This might be the first strike against the routine for some folks, but you'
Appropriately, the tone of this DVD is much calmer and slower paced than the other DVDs in P90X. The exception being towards the end where Tony accidentally gets amped up a bit, but quickly regains composure (pretty funny, actually).
I think the slower pace is what turns some people off. This is unfortunate because in today's hectic world, we need moments of quiet to recharge. Personally, my life is crazy so I'm happy to set aside 90 minutes a week to quiet my mind.
If you've never done Yoga, or think it's just for wimpy, enya-listening, granola-eaters, prepare to have your mind blown. You will shake, you will drip with sweat, you will struggle, and you will fall. You will however, get stronger, more coordinated, more flexible, and healther everytime you do this workout.
The routine is divided into 4 segments: Moving Asanas, Balance Postures, Floor Work, and an ab routine called Yoga Belly 7.
The postures, positions and poses you do work the entire body from head to toe and it's an interesting to realize how hard you are working, while at the same time trying to keep certain parts of your body (especially your face) serene and relaxed. This yin/yang "calm inside the storm" is part of what keeps bringing me back to the routine. You feel yourself get stronger and more flexible across the entire length of your body, so you go a little farther and refine your postures.
Remember that in order to progress, your body needs to recover from the more intense training modes. The placement of Yoga X within the middle of the workout week is useful for giving your body a break from the intense beating you're taking from resistance and cardio training days.
After a few weeks of Yoga X, I started also seeing some unexpected benefits, namely, my back and shoulder pain from being a desk jockey all day was slowly fading. My tight hamstrings were much looser, which unexpectedly relieved my nighttime back pains.
Overall, I have to say that Yoga X is a "hidden gem" in the P90X system. I've heard of people substituting the Yoga day with other P90X routines (namely Core synergistics and CardioX). If you can get past the fact that it's a longer routine, and your preconceived notions of what Yoga is all about, you'll receive a ton of previously unseen performance and fitness benefits from this routine that you wouldn't get if you decided to substitute it with another routine from the system, not to mention the recovery factor already stated above.
Finally, at the very end of the routine, Tony Horton sits in lotus position and begins to chant vocal "oms". I don't know about you, but that's where my "tough guy" kicks in and I have to shut off the DVD. Oms notwithstanding, based on the benefits I've received, I'm quickly moving into the "Love Yoga X" camp.
In order to get the most from your 90 day P90X experience, do Yoga X.
